7 Ways You Can Save Money on Health Insurance

Health insurance comes in literally thousands of different types of policies with even more choices for deductible limits and coverages.  But there are also ways you can save on your health insurance premium that you are in control of.

What steps can you take that give you an advantage in finding affordable health insurance quotes?  There are many things you can do, including being good to yourself and choosing certain options on health insurance plans that save you big money.

1. No Smoking– Health insurance companies like to insure healthy people.  Smokers are at higher risk of chronic medical problems like high blood pressure, lung disease, and heart disease.  Even if you currently smoke, taking steps to quit can give you an advantage when you ask for health insurance quotes.

2. Cut Drinking – Alcohol consumption in moderation is not necessarily bad.  But when alcohol is abused by high-volume drinking and alcoholism it adversely affects your health.  Actively limit your alcohol intake, or even eliminate it altogether.

3. Exercise – Exercising at least three times a week for 20 minutes can help you maintain good health.  Those 20 minutes should include maintaining an increased heart rate for at least 10 minutes.  Check exercise guides for the optimum heart rate for your age and weight group.  If you don’t perform a regular exercise routine, even a brisk walk can do you good.  Exercising regularly and staying in shape can save money on health insurance.

4. Eat right – This means eating the right foods. You need a variety of nutritious foods to give your body the nutrients it needs.  A diet of junk food or eating less may not help you stay healthy.  Consume lots of high water-content fruits and vegetables.  Meats such as chicken and fish are good for protein intake, but should be carefully monitored and in smaller portions than you might think.

5. Higher deductible– You can choose a higher deductible on your health insurance plan. A higher deductible may be a good option for healthy individuals who do not visit a physician very frequently.  But by choosing a higher deductible you agree to pay more out of pocket for your medical costs.

6. Higher Co-pay – A Co-payment is the amount you agree to pay each time you visit a physician or emergency room.  Typical co-payment amounts are $20 to $40.  By choosing a higher co-pay you can reduce your premium on a health insurance quote.

7. Compare Insurance – Shopping for insurance is always a good way to save money.  You can ask for health insurance quotes from a number of different insurers or health organizations and compare them to find the best deal.

Paying for the rising cost of health insurance premiums can be a big burden.  If you are conscious of your health and make the right health insurance policy choices you can save money.
